Annual Dublin Branch Business Lunch

The Annual Dublin Branch Business Lunch has become one of the best attended events on the CCR Union calendar and successfully attracts pastmen of all ages. This year’s event on 21st October broke new ground – instead of a single speaker, three eminent journalists took part in a discussion / Q&A moderated by Kieran Fitzgerald (CCR 1974-’79), formerly of RTE and latterly a GSOC Commissioner. The three were:

·       Conor Brady (CCR 1962-’66) former editor of the Irish Times and later a GSOC Commissioner.

·       Cormac Bourke (CCR 1989-’94) editor of Irish Independent and independent.ie and Editor-In-Chief, Mediahuis Ireland.

·       Steven Miller (CCR 1996-’02), owner and Managing Editor of the online publication Laois Today.

All contributed to a very interesting and lively session – in some respects, one could say that Steven’s story of how as a relatively young journalist married with two young children, he had taken the bold step of breaking into unchartered territory setting up a very successful  online daily in the Midlands.

It was new Union President David Hernan’s first function as President and the first Business Lunch for Dublin Branch Chairman John Verling both of whom spoke with aplomb and showed how suitable they are for the roles they now have. Special credit is due to John and Branch Secretary Aonghus Cody for organising a superb event.
